Ecommerce

Products should earn revenue. Not sit ignored.

Most service businesses add ecommerce as an afterthought — a product page bolted onto a site built for bookings. The result is a store that looks like an accident and converts like one too. We build ecommerce that fits how your business actually works: the right platform for your catalogue size, integrated with how you take clients and run operations.

The real problem

Your store looks fine. That's the problem.

Most service businesses launch ecommerce with a default theme and no strategy for how the store fits into the client journey. Traffic arrives. Nobody buys, or they buy once and disappear. The problem is rarely the platform — it's six specific gaps that show up in almost every store we audit.

01

Two systems, one business

Booking software here, a separate storefront there. Clients feel the seams — cart abandonment climbs and product discovery drops because the two revenue streams were never designed to work together.

02

Inventory tracked by hand

Spreadsheets, sticky notes, or memory. Stock sold in person never makes it back online. Out-of-stock products stay live until someone notices — usually the wrong customer, at the wrong moment.

03

Products treated as an afterthought

Buried in a tab nobody clicks, with no photography strategy, no category structure, and no reason given for why this product matters to this visitor.

04

No post-purchase follow-up

A customer buys once and never hears from you again. No abandoned cart recovery, no replenishment reminder, no reason to come back — repeat revenue left entirely to chance.

05

Checkout built for a different business

A default theme checkout that doesn't reflect your brand and doesn't build trust — adding friction at the exact moment a buyer is deciding whether to trust you with their card.

06

Invisible to product search

No SEO structure behind your products — no schema, no optimised titles, no category architecture. Buyers searching for exactly what you sell can't find you, on Google or in AI search.

Who this is for

Two platforms. Four types of business.

QBD builds ecommerce for two distinct business types. The platform, architecture, and conversion strategy differ based on whether products are your primary or secondary revenue driver.

Product brand

Pure ecommerce — products are the entire business

A cosmetics brand, a wellness product line, a fashion label, or any business where products are the only or primary revenue stream. You need a store built for conversion — collection architecture, product page copy, cross-sell logic, and post-purchase sequences that turn first buyers into repeat customers.

Service and product

Appointments and products — both matter to the business

A salon with a retail haircare line. A wellness practice selling supplements. A fitness studio with branded merchandise. You book clients and sell products, and you need a platform that handles both without splitting them across two systems.

Growing brands

Businesses scaling beyond what their current platform can handle

You started on Etsy, Squarespace Commerce, or a manual order system. Product revenue has grown to the point where you need proper inventory management, variant handling, and ecommerce automations. Shopify is the migration destination.

Not the right fit

Service-only businesses with no product component

If you book appointments and have no plans to sell physical or digital products, Squarespace is the cleaner, lower-overhead choice. See the Service Business page. A strategy call will confirm which platform makes sense for your specific situation.

Which platform

Two platforms. One right answer for your business.

The choice between Squarespace Commerce and Shopify is not a preference — it is a decision with real consequences for how your store performs, how easy it is to manage, and what it costs to run. We help you choose the right one before any build begins.

Squarespace Commerce

For service businessesselling a focused product range.

Squarespace Commerce is the right call when products are a secondary revenue stream alongside your service. A salon selling retail. A consultant selling a course or workbook. A studio adding merchandise. The platform integrates with your existing Squarespace site and does not require a separate storefront to manage.

You already have or want a Squarespace website
You sell fewer than 200 products
Products complement your service — not the primary business
You want one platform to manage, not two
You do not need complex inventory or advanced shipping

Shopify

For businesses whereecommerce is the product.

Shopify is the right call when the store is the business or when product complexity has outgrown what Squarespace Commerce can handle. A brand transitioning toward product-first revenue. An ecommerce operation that needs apps, integrations, and inventory systems Squarespace cannot support.

You sell 200+ products, or expect to scale there
You need advanced inventory, multi-location, or complex shipping
Your product business operates independently of your service
You need specific apps — subscriptions, reviews, loyalty, wholesale
You have an existing store that is not converting or growing
You started on Squarespace Commerce and have outgrown it

What is included

Every build covers the full conversion stack.

Regardless of platform, every ecommerce engagement includes the same foundations. The platform-specific work layers on top.

Platform setup and configuration

Domain, payments, taxes, and shipping configured correctly from day one. No hidden gotchas after launch.

Product architecture

URL structure, category hierarchy, and internal linking built for both usability and search visibility.

Conversion-first product pages

Title, description, imagery layout, trust signals, and CTAs structured around how buyers actually make purchase decisions.

SEO and structured data

On-page SEO across all product and category pages. Product schema implemented so your products appear in AI search and rich results.

Platform-specific optimisation

For Squarespace Commerce: built natively within your existing site. For Shopify: theme build or customisation plus app stack scoped to your needs.

Handover and documentation

A Loom walkthrough covering how to manage products, update content, and run the store day to day. You are not dependent on us after launch.

How it works

Strategy first. Build second.

Every engagement starts with a strategy call to agree scope and platform. From there we work to an agreed timeline and check in at each milestone.

01

Book a strategy call

We discuss your product range, current platform setup, revenue goals, and whether Squarespace Commerce or Shopify is the right fit. Scope and timeline agreed before any work begins.

02

Architecture and planning

We map the product hierarchy, category structure, and page architecture before building anything. This is where most ecommerce builds go wrong — skipping straight to design without strategy.

03

Build

Platform setup, product pages, collection architecture, SEO implementation, structured data, and checkout optimisation — all built to the agreed scope.

04

Handover

Written summary, Loom walkthrough, and a 30-day support window. You leave knowing how to manage the store and what to monitor going forward.

Investment

Scoped to your catalogue. Agreed before work begins.

Ecommerce projects are scoped based on product count, catalogue complexity, platform, and whether we are building from scratch or extending an existing site. The right scope conversation happens in the strategy call — not on this page.

Questions

Before you get started.

If your question is not here, the strategy call is the right place to ask it.

The decision comes down to two things: catalogue size and revenue intent. If you have fewer than 200 products and ecommerce is secondary to your service, Squarespace Commerce is almost always right — simpler to manage and integrated with your existing site. If ecommerce is the primary business or you need apps Squarespace cannot support, Shopify is the call. We work through this in the strategy call.
Yes. We handle migrations from Shopify to Squarespace Commerce and vice versa, as well as from WooCommerce or other platforms to either. Migrations include product data, URL redirects, SEO preservation, and a post-migration audit.
Yes. We work with service businesses launching products for the first time. This often includes structuring the product range and positioning before any build begins.
We implement 301 redirects for all old product and category URLs, preserve existing titles and meta descriptions where they are working, and run a post-migration Search Console audit. A migration done correctly does not lose your existing search rankings.
Yes. If you have a Squarespace Business plan or higher, Squarespace Commerce can be activated on your existing site. We extend your current design system into the store rather than building a disconnected storefront.
Yes. Shopify requires its own monthly subscription. We scope and build the store — the subscription is your direct relationship with Shopify. We recommend the right plan for your catalogue and needs during the strategy call.
Squarespace Commerce builds for a service business adding products typically take three to five weeks. Shopify builds depend on catalogue size and app complexity — typically four to eight weeks. Timeline is confirmed after scoping.
