Local SEO for Service Business Part 3: Get Cited by AI + Your 30-Day Action Plan

This is Part 3 of the Local SEO Series

‍ ‍

Part 1 covered the foundation. Part 2 covered what decides who wins the map pack. This final part covers two things most local SEO guides skip entirely: how to get found by AI search tools, and how to know whether any of this is working.

Local SEO Foundations Series:

  • Part 1: Local SEO Foundations →

  • Part 2: Getting Listed in the Google Map Pack

  • Part 3: AI Search, Tracking, and Your 30-Day Plan (you are here)

Local search isn't just for Google anymore

Your customers are increasingly asking AI tools, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, questions they used to type straight into a search bar. "Best bookkeeper near me" is starting to show up as a conversational question to an AI assistant, not just a Google search.

These tools don't crawl and rank the way traditional search does. They synthesize an answer from sources they trust and cite. The good news, based on everything covered in Parts 1 and 2: the same signals that win the map pack also feed AI tools. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your citations, and your website content are the sources AI tools draw from too.

What changes is how you write. AI tools favour content that answers a real question directly, in plain language, over content that buries the answer in three paragraphs of branding first.

A simple test: write your website copy the way you'd answer the question out loud. "What does a bookkeeper cost in Toronto?" works better as a header than "Our Pricing" because it matches how someone would ask.

Adding a short, direct FAQ section to your key pages, formatted with clear question headers, gives both human visitors and AI tools something easy to extract a clean answer from.

What to Track, and How Often

Local SEO is slow to show results and easy to lose track of. Without a simple way to check in, it's common to either give up too early or keep doing the same things without knowing if they're working.

Four numbers, all available directly inside your Google Business Profile, tell you most of what you need to know:

  • Calls placed directly from your listing

  • Direction requests to your location or service area

  • Profile views in search and Maps

  • Website clicks from your listing

Check these on the same day each month. Pair them with your review count for a complete snapshot.

A realistic curve, not a straight line:

  • Month 1: Minimal movement; this is the foundation-setting month.

  • Month 2: Early signs, impressions and views starting to tick up.

  • Month 3: Real momentum, ranking gains and engagement increases for at least a few terms.

  • Months 4 to 6: Sustained growth, review count and engagement trending clearly upward.

If numbers are flat or declining for two consecutive months, that's the signal to revisit your profile, not a reason to assume local SEO doesn't work.

Your 30-Day Plan

Here's how to sequence everything from this series into a month you can finish.

Week 1: Foundation:
Complete or review your Google Business Profile (Part 1). Identify your top 3 local competitors and compare against them (Part 2).

Week 2: Profile and Citations:
Finish every remaining profile field, photos, posts, and Q&A. Claim your core directory listings and confirm your NAP is consistent everywhere.

Week 3: Website and Reviews:
Add local schema markup to your site. Update page titles and meta descriptions to include your city naturally. Start a consistent review request habit.

Week 4: AI Layer and Tracking:
Add a short FAQ section to your website using direct, plain-language answers. Set up a simple monthly tracking habit using the four numbers above.

After Day 30:
Local SEO shifts from setup to maintenance, a weekly GBP post, monthly number check, and quarterly citation review keeps everything moving instead of sliding backward.

‍ ‍The Big Picture

‍ ‍

Across this three-part series, the pattern has stayed the same: local SEO rewards specificity, consistency, and follow-through more than any single trick. The businesses that win aren't the ones with a perfect one-time setup; they're the ones who keep the habit going.
